sila

sila is a generative installation, printed images, and sound series.  The content of the work is taken from Clarke's 2012 Arctic expedition. She traveled up the coast of Greenland collecting data, images, video, field recordings and interviews with Greenlandic hunters and others. This content is presented in an immersive installation, altered through custom software and generative algorithms. The glass sculpture was developed to reference the calving ice and landscape, as well as infrastructure Clarke experienced in Greenland. As the installation is experienced over time, oil and water drips onto the glass which is held together in areas with water soluble paper. Pieces of glass fell to the floor and then rearranged to create new neo-landscapes. The projected video contained thousands of images of ice recorded on the trip, composited over time using a custom computer vision algortihm, it averaged and gathered from one image to the next traces and deposited or removed to create speculative imagery of ice, water and land. The sound layers field recordings from the trip, data sonnification, and analog / digital processing. Video stills and images of Greenlandic life, including ice have also printed and hung in the installation.
